I am about to begin a project and I thought I should ask for some advice before I proceed.
I am building a new house and (of course) a new kennel. I am planning an exercise yard of about 75' x 140'. I am probably going to use 5' high chainlink. I am on my fourth drahthaar and so far my experience tells me 5' high should be adequate. I have never had a jumper or a digger. Is this typical for the breed? Anyone have any thoughts for me?

Tom:

A couple of things to consider:
(1) Will your dog be unattended in your exercise yard?
(2) Is your drahthaar a male or female? If it is a male and you plan on keeping him intact are there any females that routinely come into heat around your neighborhood?
(3) If you have a female and do not plan on spaying her, are there any males that run loose in your area?
(4) Are you in an area where there are a lot of small game running about, including cats?

Really only you know your drahthaar, but if he has a high prey drive on furred game and there are a lot of furred animals around
you might want to make sure your dog is supervised while running loose in your yard. I know of several people whose dogs went over a five foot high fence to get to the cat on the other side.

I never worry so much about my drahthaars, it is everyone else's dogs that run free that worry. If you have a female that is not spayed, it is surprising just how many males she can attract. While your dog may not attempt to climb out you might have to worry about other dogs getting into your yard. If you have a male and there are females that run around the neighborhood and are not spayed that might be a real challenge to keep your male from leaving your yard if left unattended.

The individual kennel enclosures at my kennel are five feet high, but each inside/outside run is covered. I did this primarily for my peace of mind as I have males and females in my kennel. I did not want to have to worry that one of them could climb out and getting into trouble.

The area around my kennel building is fenced so that I can turn my dogs out to run around and exercise while I clean their kennels. This fence is also five feet high. The dogs are never out in the exercise area unless I am down there, so I normally do not have to worry about their climbing/jumping, digging out.

Thanks Wildflugel! All of your points are valid and worth consideration. Proverbs 27 verse 17 says "iron sharpens iron".
I guess that means when you get people together that have a little knowledge about a subject someone is bound to come up with something smart!

Every once in a while I find myself driving down highway 30 in Nebraska and I pass a sign that indicates that I am somewhere near Revena. One of these days I'll have to call ahead and drop by.

Glad I could help, if you ever get down this way again make sure you give me a call. I work in Grand Island during the day, but am home or around the area most evenings.

Can you guys post some pics of your kennel setups? I'm looking at building a pole barn/outbuilding next year with 4-6 runs and have some ideas, but pictures offer lots of ideas too.

Hopefully this worked. I haven't posted any pics in quite awhile.
I just completed my new home about 6 months ago and to be honest my kennel is one of the things that I like the most so I am always glad to talk about it.
Here's my two cents worth. Before you build a metal building get a quote for a traditional wood frame building. I did and I was shocked at the cost of steel buildings. I was able to put up an insulated wood building with cement floor with floor drains, heat, hot and cold water, electricity...the whole works for the same money.
My building (the man cave, as my wife calls it) is approximately 30'x50'. The back 20' is kennel and the front 30' is storage for my boat, tractor etc. The kennel portion is only 26' wide. I did this to recess the exterior kennels into the building by 4 feet. This was done merely for aesthetics. That way I could still get outside runs 10 feet long and only have them protrude 6' from the rest of the building. This way they have a covered roof that is still proportional in size to the rest of the building. The final result is the ability to expand up to 4 runs that would be 5'x10' outside and 5'x6' inside. I currently only have 3 runs so one is double sized.
The kennels face south so that I can take advantage of the nice southern sun and shield the dogs from the bitter South Dakota wind that seems to howl out of the northwest all winter.
Another thing that I did that worked well is I lined the inside kennel walls with glass board to make clean up easy.

Tom - very nice! That's very close to what I was thinking of doing. I will probably make mine a bit longer (60'?) to fit more toys and tools in. I like the 4' recess idea - that looks very nice. I haven't checked into prices on pole barn - vs- stick build. I'll probably do stick build myself.

BTW, your first pic is just missing a [ before the IMG.

If you get a chance you might post up some pictures of your kennel set-up. It is nice and well thought out. It won't hurt to post up as many examples as we can.

OK, Taking pictures for the web site has been on the to-do list for awhile. I will move it up the list. Just remember there are sequences that fall into play.
