Here's a plug for Dogtra "Train & Beep" collars. I owned a model 2002 (two dog) unit for 5 trouble free years. The batteries seem to hold their charge forever. Excellent build quality, almost like medical grade equipment. I just upgraded to the new 2502 Train & Beep and everything about it is more compact and lighter, yet it seems to be of the same build quality. It has some nice beeper options like 3 volume levels, and a low/high tone. I started conditioning my young DD pup to the lowest volume level and it didn't bother him a bit. With others units you would need to stuff them with tissue and tape them as you got your dog conditioned to the sound, then gradually reduce the "stuffing" as your dog accepted the sound.
In my hunting of ruffed grouse and wild pheasant in hellish cover, I find the point beep invaluable for locating the dog on point. I run mine on the "point only" mode. If you set the unit to "point only" it only beeps when your dog goes on point (or takes a dump). The Dogtra unit also has a separate "locate" button, so you can run without the beeper at all and just push the locate button and get a quick beep to locate your dog. The problem I have with bells is that they quit working when you need them most.
So anyway, if your in the market for a trainer/beeper combo, give the new Dogtra a look!
No, I have no financial interest in Dogtra. I'm just a die-hard hunter who likes to pass the word about something that someones else may find useful.
