I have a 6 month old Draht and have been feeding her Eagle Pack Large breed puppy formula. If I feed her the recommended amount she becomes very guarded and possessive of her food and acts as though she is always hungry. The dog trainer we go to simply suggested giving her more food and putting her bowl in the middle of the floor when she eats. The trainer had said that she had the same problem with one of her dogs and that she switched the dog to another brand and everything was fine. I am thinking of switching my Draht to the Royal Canine line and would like to hear what you all have to say. My Draht's health is very important to me.

I personally would not tolerate the behavior for any reason. The suggest amount of food on the package is just a guide as all dogs are different. I go by the physical condition of the dog. If they look thin I will give more if they are looking a bit heavy I will cut them back. It also can vary with the amount of exercise they are getting.

Greenranch - Don't get me wrong I do not tolerate it for any reason either. The problem WAS that she would growl at the kids if they messed with her when she was eating. Emma (our Draht) would not not growl at me or my wife. That is why we started making the kids feed her and pet her when she was eating (supervised of course). All of that seemed to remedy the problem. Most of all thanks for the input Greenranch it is very much appreciated.

Greenranch is right. The feeding guidelines are just that, guidelines. I never even look at the guidelines to tell you the truth. I feed what my dog needs. My pup is a chow hound and would over eat if I let her so I watch her closely. If she seems to be putting on weight, I cut back. She is 10 mos, 65 pounds (she's a big girl ~ not fat), and eats about 3 cups a day of Eukanuba Premium Performance. If she's spent the day in the field, she gets 4 cups that evening. She hasn't had puppy food since about 5 months of age.
Personally, I don't think the brand of dog food will make a difference with your pups' food aggression. That's something that will have to be dealt with through discipline and behaviour modification and it sounds like you are on the right track.

Thanks ddmom. The food aggresion is gone. I feed Emma 2 heeping cups of Eagle Pack Large Breed Puppy Formula in the morning and 2 heeping cups in the evening. This was reduced form 2 1/2 cups twice a day when she started to put on a little wieght. Emma is nothing but muscle now.
Our Dog tainer had told us that she had experienced a similar problem with Eagle Pack. One of her three dogs would eat it and it was as if it had eaten air while the other two were fiine. When she switched to another brand this problem went away.
Thanks again ddmom
