Allright I have a goofy question.
I was planning on starting my pup on her force fetch traing this weekend but she has decided to throw a bit of a twist in my plans. (Or should I say she is coming into her own.)
My question is has any one out there worked through the Force Fetch routine with a Bitch in heat and how well did it work?
Or should I just wait?
I think I will be choosing the Latter.

Jim:
Before responding to your question, do you have a force fetch program you will following, i.e. Evan Graham, Mike Lardy, Jim and Phyllis Dobbs, Jim and Amy Dahl, etc. Just wondering as it might make a bit of a difference how individuals respond if they know which process you will be using.
In my opinion, there is no reason you can not start the force fetch process now as you will not be applying any "force" at this time (as in ear pinch, toe hitch, etc.). By the time you are ready to introduce "force" into the process your female should be coming out of heat.
I normally introduce my young pups to force fetch shortly after their permanent teeth come in. I start with introducing the pup to my gloved hand. I want them to accept my gloved hand and hold it in their mouth without fighting to spit it out. You can do the same thing with a paint roller, it is soft light-weight and easy to work with.
If you have not yet firmly decided on a force fetch program, I would like to recommend you consider Evan Graham's "SmartFetch" book and/or DVD. Evan's book is well written, easy to read, and lays out the process in such a way that anyone can follow it. You do not necessarily need both the book and DVD, but if you can afford to get both I would suggest you consider it. If you could only get one, I would suggest his DVD.
I hope I have answered your question. If you need additional information, please let me know. Good luck.

WildFlugel,
Thanks for the response.
I am going to start out with teaching her to hold (Dobbs) Then move into the ear pinch or the e collar. Ear pinch I have done before still learning about the e-colloar method. Then it's on to retrieving excercises bumper piles etc.....
I just want to make it stick without having to go back and with her cooped up for the next couple of weeks she will be kind of stir crazy.
I think your right about not getting to the force untill afterwords. right now we can work on hold and have it down without rushing into the force.
Thanks Again

Hi guys, I wanted to raise an issue that happened to me recently.. I have a DD male puppy - four and a half months - and beside that he is doing very well on pointing, whoa and tracking. I was lucky since I am living in area where quails are just next door of my house and in fact the puppy is just showing his natural abilities. Last week after a perfect pointing, I shot a quail and after that he went to get it but he refused to bringit to me. Then a terrible thing happened; I noticed that he is wiping out and trying to swallow the bird. In couple of minutes he started to swallow the bird then I got hold of him and forcefully took the bird out of his mouth. Immediately I sent him back to kennel. I was consulting some old hunters and they said that this is not a good thing but it happens and they proposed to start immediately with the Force Fetch. Any ideas? What next steps???

Not sure what your end goals are but at 4 1/2 months old is the dog steady to the flush of the birds? I doubt it. In my opinion ( and you know what they say about opinions) I would be letting the pup bump and chase the birds at that age. If they are good flying birds he will soon learn he cant catch them and point longer and longer. Then start FF after his adult teeth are in all the way ( usually 6-7 months). At that time you could start working on some steadiness drills. Only after his FF is complete would I shoot birds for him, I actually like to wait until they are steady to flush to shoot birds. No need to rush things, let him be a pup.
