What other furred critters do you regularly hunt with your DD besides rabbits? I hunt cottontails & snowshoes, but squirrels are the only thing we regularly hunt. We go after the ground squirrels that get into everything around here, but I let him catch and kill them.
My DD has been "exposed" to skunks and porcupines, raccoons, and deer but we don't activly hunt them.
Just wondering what everyone hunts.

Wes:
I routinely hunt cottontail rabbits and squirrels with my drahthaars. The rabbit season in Nebraska is open through February (a month after the upland bird seasons close) and I look at it as an opportunity to extend my hunting season and stock up on rabbits for the upcoming HZP training and tests. I personally know of a few people that run coons with their dogs and a few individuals in Montana that use their drahthaars to hunt mountain lions and a couple in the southeast that run hogs with theirs.

I was curious as to how some use them to hunt game such as coons or pigs. I understand using DDs to blood track pigs, but how do people use them to hunt them? I've had coonhounds in the past, and of course they have two completely different ways of hunting. do the people that use them for coon hunting train them by letting them run with hounds? Just curious.

Wes:
From the individuals I know that use their dogs to hunt coons, they have trained their dogs with the "specialists." Their dogs ran with hounds and they eventually got the idea. Of course, it helps to have a drahthaar with a lot of prey drive.
I never asked individuals who use their dogs to hunt pigs how they trained their dogs. I would assume it is an extension of blood tracking, i.e. possibly wounding the pig and allowing the dog to run the track and eventually letting the dog run hot tracks. I know there was a husband and wife in Australia that used their dogs to hunt pigs. Their web site is not active anymore, but they had numerous pictures of their drahthaars wearing body armor to prevent them from getting gored.
